Three sanctuaries in the Uttarakhand, Shivaliks – Rajaji, Motichur and Chila were merged into a huge protected zone and named Rajaji National Park in the year 1983 and the name derived from the name of famous freedom fighter Late Sri C. Rajgopalachari popularly acknowledged as "Rajaji".Rajaji Tiger Reserve whose former name was Rajaji National Park is situated in the Shivalik range of Himalayas and range approximately 820 km. The region of Rajaji National Park covers a part of three district of Uttarakhand state which are Haridwar, Dehradun and Pauri Garhwal. It now turn out to be the second Tiger reserve of Uttarakhand after Corbett National Park. On 20 April 2015 its name converted from Rajaji National Park to Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
The small settlement of Chilla almost 13 km northeast which functions as the base for visiting this reserve.
